"Chinny Raccoon" (chinnyraccoon)

I’ve had these Arkana chairs for a while and hopefully in the next few months will also somewhere nice to put them (instead of languishing in the back of the office).
As they are from the 60’s and not well stored they need refinishing. The gel coat has crazed in places where the seat has flexed, and is quite stained in places- the photos flatter them.
Any suggestions on paints? Thinking- prep sanding, plastic/etch primer then a synthetic enamel over the top. Maybe a cellulose would be better?

Epoxy primer and two-part polyurethane. Difficult to use correctly
, but it works.

Look for a product called Easypoxy made by Pettit. It’s a single part and really easy to apply. Roll and tip it and you can get a really nice, even finish. I used it on a boat project once and it dries hard and shiny. It also comes in a bunch of colors. If I can get a good result with this paint, anyone can. Rolling and tipping is easy if you use a nice brush.
Another cheaper option might be something by TotalBoat which is the in house brand of Jamestown Distributors.

Prep is the most important thing. I used this product which is high build and easy to sand.

synthetic enamel? I haven’t heard that in years. Doubt you could find it now. Optimum choice is probably single stage urethane. I wouldn’t sand those cracks out of the gel coat, a skim coat of filler is the best bet. No need for the plastic primer...sanded gel coat is fine to paint directly over. You’ll need a filler primer if you do any filling. Finish sand with 400 wet. If you prefer to coat it with something before paint get a sealer.
